Thiruvananthapuram: Renowned magician and State Icon of the Election Department, Gopinath Muthukad, captivated the audience with his innovative magic show, “We the People,” aimed at promoting civic awareness and the credibility of the democratic electoral process. This engaging event, held on Friday, was organized in collaboration with the State Chief Electoral Officer’s office and the Different Art Centre as a precursor to National Voter’s Day.

Spreading Awareness Through Magic

The magic performance by Gopinath Muthukad centred on vital themes, including the significance of choosing eligible candidates, making informed use of voting rights, the importance and reliability of elections, and the values of democracy. A highlight of the event was the thematic magic act titled “Watch Your Watch.” Each letter of the word “WATCH” symbolized essential concepts: Wise Decision, Action, Trust, Civic Sense, and Harmony. Muthukad’s creative integration of these ideas into his performance earned widespread admiration and applause from the audience.

Key Highlights of the Event

The “We the People” magic show was held at Vazhuthacaud Women’s College and inaugurated by Chief Electoral Officer Dr. Rathan U. Khelkar, IAS. In his inaugural address, Dr. Khelkar highlighted the reluctance of individuals aged 18 to 30 to participate in voting and stressed the importance of their role in the democratic process. He encouraged the youth to take the lead as brand ambassadors in spreading awareness about the value of elections.

Additional Chief Electoral Officer Sharmila C. delivered the keynote speech, underscoring the critical role of civic participation in strengthening democracy. Other prominent attendees included Binoy Viswam, Women’s College Principal Anila J.S., and ELC District Coordinators Dr. Mahesh and Shaima Jacob. The event concluded with a heartwarming performance of the Election Commission’s theme song by differently-abled children from the Different Art Centre, adding a special touch to the occasion.
